1. Historic Sugartown

Sugartown, originally called Shugart’s Town, is a charming rural crossroads village five miles from Devon. The perfectly preserved and restored 19th-century settlement was once a vibrant town providing goods and services to the local farmers and a rest stop for weary travelers hauling wagons packed with goods to Philadelphia’s markets. The Carriage Museum, General Store, Saddler’s Shop, and historic homes provide an accurate glimpse into Pennsylvania’s past.

Historic Sugartown is at 690 Sugartown Road in Malvern and offers guided tours on Saturdays between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. from May through September.

2. Ridley Creek State Park

Take a short eight-mile drive to the breathtaking 2,606-acre Ridley Creek State Park and spend the day exploring the meadows and woodlands on miles of hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails. Visit the magnificent Hunting Hill Mansion, a large English country manor built in 1789.

Visit the Colonial Pennsylvania Plantation, a working farm for over 300 years. Watch the family prepare meals over the open hearth, tend crops, process textiles, and do other farm chores and experience farm life in the late 18th century.

3. The Philadelphia Museum of Art

Head 23 miles down the road to Philadelphia to view art from around the world at the renowned Philadelphia Museum of Art, which displays one of the largest collections of artworks in the United States. The museum’s 200 galleries exhibit 227,000 sculptures, paintings, prints, drawings, photographs, and textiles. The vast collection includes European art dating from 1300 to 1950, works by American modernists, and Asian art spanning over 4,000 years.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art is at 2600 Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia and is open Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday between 10 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

4. The Historic Pottstown Carousel

Drive to Pottstown, 25 miles from Devon, to ride on the second-oldest operating carousel in the United States. The beautiful wooden Pottstown Carousel, adorned with sparkling lights and a menagerie of striking hand-carved and colorfully painted jumping animals and chariots, was built in 1905 by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company. While you’re there, enjoy delicious refreshments at the beautiful 1865 horse-drawn trolley snack bar.

The Historic Pottstown Carousel is at 30 West King Street in Pottstown, and you can take a spin on Saturdays and Sundays between 12 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
